I'm almost done with break-in period and ready to get my first service done (600 miles). Simi valley cycles want to charge around $300 for it. Is it reasonable ? What are the things I need to look out for ? The guy I bought the bike from haven't done much to the bike and has used only 300 miles for last 4 years. Any suggestions or advice would greatly help. Thanks

I think you should do it your self and save $250. all you need to replace is the oil, oil filter, and clean the chain. Use 10-W40 (3 qt's) synthetic 4 stroke motor oil.. I prefer the racing 4T oil from Mobil 1. You can pick up a filter from the dealer or I think Walmart for around 10 dollars... to clean your chain use #2 diesel from the pump, and motul chain oil after its clean, you could also use Maxima chain wax.. my partner swears by it.

Make sure the idle is around 1400ish, and if not you can adjust it. the screw is about knee level on the left side.

throttle play, it should feel smooth and does not stick.. if it does its an easy fix.

break pads should look like they have a lot of meat on them for 600 miles

Should be able to move the handle bats and the wheel moves with them, if there is any play between them.. thats a big problem

In all it should cost you about $65 for all the parts and oil, and a lot of TLC time with your girl 90% of all the parts could be bought at cycle gear or your local cycle shop.

$300 sounds kind of steep. The first service is essentially a glorified oil change with inspections.

In the LA area, you can find this service anywhere between $100-$150. My cousin just had his first service on his Ninja for $115.

o'reilly auto parts carries a wix oil filter, part# 51359, that's a good brand.
also recommend kerosene for cleaning the chain, won't harm the o rings or your hands. a gallon of it is pretty cheap at lowes/home depot and handy for cleaning various other crud on the bike too.
other than the oil change, check all the fasteners for proper torque, adjustment of clutch and throttle cables, coolant level, brake fluid, and tire pressure.
idle speed is non adjustable on 07 and up.

You don't NEED to use synthetic. Just make sure it's motorcycle specific or JASO MA certified )i.e. good for wet clutches) I use rotella t 15w-40 it's super cheep at Walmart ($12 ish)

I think I'll be able to do above maintenance except the clutch and throttle adjustment. Maybe I'll have to look for how to on those. The service guy was also talking about brake bleeding. My bike has only 600 miles. Does it need brake bleeding ? How do I know if there is air pocket built up ?

the cable adjustments are easy. with so few miles it may not even need any. i've got 57000 on mine and never had to adj the throttle cables, only adj the clutch cable a few times, mostly due to unhooking one end to lube it. the owner's manual has the procedure, pretty simple. (also look for andy auger's clutch mantra on this site. good stuff.)
bleeding the brakes might be a good idea. the fluid tends to attract moisture, and bleeding is a service recommened due to time, not mileage.(ie- every 2 yrs.) the bleeder valves are close enough to the lever that it shouldn't be an issue unless you have really short arms. be sure to use dot 4 fluid, (get new stuff in a sealed container). the total capacity is so small you can completely refill front and rear, waste some, and still have plenty left over from a 12 oz container.
