So question for the experts. I have a 2005 SV650s Bought it brand new has between 14000-15000 miles right now.

My issue is this, on hot days after riding and stopping at a store or something like that then when I go to start it again the fuel pump doesn't prime and it says FI where the temp is and the FI red light is one.

This has happened a couple of times throughout the years but is starting to happen more often. I have found that when this happens if I open the gas tank for a second and then close it the fuel pump primes as usual and the bike fires right up.

Hasn't ever happened on a cold day but sometimes. after riding on a hot day and parking it over night the next morning I will run into the problem

I was thinking it is a vapor locking issue as venting the gas tank fixes it and it never leaves me stranded but I am assuming that it will at some time. Any Idea what could be causing this.

the next time it gives you the FI light try to put it in dealer mode, as i suspect that its trying to give you an error code to let you know whats wrong.

you might even want to try it when your bike is acting "normal" too, since it might still give you a code.

if you think venting is an issue, try to find something that you can clean out the vent hose. maybe an adventurous bug has clogged it up.

The easiest way to pull the code, is to buy a "dealer mode switch", about $15 from Suzuki, plug it in and leave it in the off position, until you have another FI error. To get the code you must leave the ignition on when the FI light comes on. Turning the ignition off will remove the code....in other words, the bike does not store the code. Then you can look up the code and you will know what the FI problem is.

But, if the problem is solved by opening the tank, I would bet that your vent is clogged, as noted by Dry-humor.

How are you opening the tank? With the key? Meaning you have to remove it from the ignition switch and insert into the cap to open it. If so, have you tried just removing the key and skip the tank opening part and see if it starts? Might have nothing to do with the tank and everything to do with the switch recognizing the key...or not. And retrying it makes it work. Just a thought......

I have tried just taking the key out. I have tried turning the key from off to on a couple of times. I have bumped the start button quickly then turned it off.

The only thing that works. And it works every time is opening the gas tank with the key.

I just wish I knew that it either wasn't a big deal because it was a vapor lock issue or if it was something more

Buy the dealer plug-in tool take your spare key with you. When it happen again leave the key switch on then use your spare to open the rear seat to get the error code. I keep a spare key hidden in tool box area normally. Just in case I lose my keys I'm not stranded

just look up "dealer mode" in search and theres a super easy way to get it set up with a small piece of wire.
