I personally think it's worth it. The ability to tune rebound and compression independently can make the difference between having your damping set up to 'kinda how you want it' and 'close to ideal.' A shock with additional adjustment of high and low speed damping such as a 3-way offers is even better. The down sides are, obviously, cost and complexity of tuning. Though the 'complexity' can be a good or bad thing depending on what you want.

I like a lot of adjustability on suspension components, both on-road and off-road(track) applications. As far as the 'need' for adjustability, you could bolt a steel rod to the back of you bike and it's still be ridable.

I've played with most kinds of shocks except for 3-way adjustable shocks. Cost prohibitive as far as I'm concerned.
