The MSF Basic RiderCourse is never BYOB. Cheapest I've ever seen is $195, but I'm in South Florida. Maybe in Central or North Florida, you could find one for $150 or so, but I doubt you'll find cheaper than that.

^^^ My mistake.

But yeah, in some states, the Basic course is either free or some nominal amount, like $50, but that's because those states subsidize the cost. Florida isn't one of them.

Yeah, not only is the course not subsidized in Florida, but it's mandatory to get your motorcyle endorsement.

EDIT: Quick web search, cheapest I found was $225. Going rate these days seems to be $250. Here's a list to get you started:

$225 at the Florida Safety Council for Greater Orlando and Brevard County only.

You can always try Harley Davidson with their Rider's Edge class, same thing but with HD theme stuff thrown in. But you do get the same MSF class and endorsement when you're done. I took it, didn't have a problem and no one tried to sell me a HD bike or any HD gear or accessories either. HD in Ocala has the Rider Edge class but the Gainesville HD doesn't have the class. I think I paid about $250-$280 which was more then the safety council but they had the class times I could make around my work schedule so it was worth the extra money.

Do I need to bring a motorcycle?
No, motorcycles are provided for all BRC participants.

How much does the course cost?
The course is free to Illinois residents; however, BRC participants must pay a $20.00 (USD) refundable registration deposit.

Where does the funding come from for these courses?
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Cycle Rider Safety Training Program provides funding for these courses from motorcycle registration and motorcycle license fees.

I paid $225 here, they give a $25 discount to Law Enforcement/Military. I don't know if all MSF's do this, but Ridelikeapro sent my course data electronically to the tax collectors office. All I did was show up and get my endorsed license, no hassles or paperwork. The instructors were really nice and they aren't a mickey mouse organization.

Jdub, you can keep your free MSF, I'll take the 365 day riding weather of Florida over the Artic Shelf otherwise known as Illinois.

Well in FL, it was made a requirement for getting your license, so everyone must take it. So they can pretty much charge whatever they please.

Wow. That sucks for you guys. I live in PA and it's absolutely free all you need is a permit. No fee, no deposit, nothing. They even supply helmets if you don't have one. I am actually looking into applying to be a RiderCoach my instructor recommended me and he said they start off around $20/hour. Not too bad for a part time job!
