It's James Burke's series "The Day the Universe Changed" and "Connections". I can remeber watching these in awe when I was in my teens/early 20's and I have to say it's the best educational TV I've ever seen (and I've watched a lot!). BTW, a lot of it has to do with the advancement of machinery and how that machinery came about.

There are a lot of free lecture videos, audio, slides and stuff. Not quite discovery channel but a lot of accessible knowledge.
