I've got the same issue, only with a yoshi slip on + K&N filter.

 

I have the same problem with my 08 SV650sf. Stock air filter and a M4 slip-on. I had a mechanic tell me the only fixes would be to choose one of three options.

1. Put the stock exhaust back on.

or

2. Install a power commander.

or

3. Have the ECU professionally mapped.

I'm curious to see what others may suggest.

 

Option 1 is actually not an option.

 

Some popping on decel is normal. You can disable the PAIR valve and see if that helps.

If not, pull the plugs and check their condition. If they show you're running too lean or too rich, a PC will help. If not, a PC won't help and you just have to live with it.

 

Its the PAIR system.

a) Block it, reduce/eliminate popping/backfires and produce slightly higher emissions

b) Live with it.

If you do a search of PAIR disable or something along those lines you'll find it.

 

You can fix it if it bothers you, but it's not going to break anything.

 

Popping on deaccel is cool, sweet, neat what ever word you choose, leave it alone.

Happens to me with the Delkevic 200mm, I love it. Except when its a super loud gunshot sound every once in a while and it always seems to happen in front of cops.

This was happening to my first gen after re-jetting. the biggest thing I found that made a difference was synchronizing the carbs and messing with the a/f screw. Now, I know you have a 2nd gen, so I dunno how much I'm helping if I am....if not....free bump!

 

My 2003 does it just a little when decelerating. Usually when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd or when simply decelerating in 3rd gear.

I have a full yoshi pipe and a power commander mapped for the yoshi pipe. I personally LOVE it when it does it.

 

I've yet to see flames at night, but anyone else's backfire produce fire balls?

 

All the time when bouncing off the rev-limiter.

Looks cool as heck but ain't there enough dangers just tryn to avoid the cagers, that'll just draw them right into you lol, or just catch me on fire.

I never noticed fire from my sv but I don't look at the muffler when I'm riding lol. I like the poping on deceleration, even the occasional gunshot.

 

from what i've read on here on many different threads is it's normal. something about gas that hasn't been burned going into the exhaust and popping there. the PAIR system thing can help to reduce it, there is also another mod/ regular maintenance thing. cant for the life of me remember what its called. like the THS or TS mod. personally i really dig it, i think it sounds mean. (renegade exhaust with snorkel removed) about pulling the plugs that only will work on the first gen cause since the 2nd is fuel injected it sends different amounts of fuel at different rates. or at least that was my understanding. hope this helps

EDIT- whoops TPS adjustment, don't think it has anything to do with popping just parking lot maneuvers if the bike is jerky at slow speeds.

 

my 03 svs with yosh RS3 slipon and K&N filter pops on decel all the time and blows flames when at or near redline. It was pretty neat to see it at night when following on my buddies bike. I was on his GSXR 750 and he wasnt expecting to hit redline so quick.
The only thing I'd like to change is to not smell like exhaust fumes after a long ride.

 

If i had a dime for everytime my exhaust popped i would have an aprilla rsv4.

 

It's definitely the PAIR system. My nephew had the same thing happening with his Kawi ZX-10 and removing the PAIR system virtually eliminated the popping on deceleration.

Some people like the popping sound and some can't stand it I guess. It wouldn't bother me
one bit.

 

as mentioned, and i being a tech..

it will pop on decel unless you

1. replace with stock pipe
2. power commander and have it professionally tuned
3. "flash" the ECM

on my bike i have a delkevic pipe with k&n and it doesn't pop at all. i kinda wish it would cuz i like the sound of it but i like knowing my bike is running at tip top shape. helps to have TPS in sync perfectly too.

 

Most vehicles with gasoline engines slightly backfire (small popping noises) when decelerating, but the stock mufflers drown out the noise. Carburetors will do it more than F/I. If there are loud backfires, it is generally too rich of a mixture and a slight air leak somewhere in the exhaust system (or the PAIR system being helpful). That's from the dim recesses of my aging memory, anyway.

 

I too love the pop and burble on decel. There's just something great about being on a twisty mountain road in 3rd gear, coming up on a curve and rolling off the throttle, and then you hear it, pop pop burble burble. What's not to like?!

 

It's the compression. High Compression engines will backfire pretty often cause of the extra pressure and unburned fuel. My car does the same thing and it is really high compression to.

 

the SV is not a high comp motor. a TB sync sounds needed. mine did it a little bit finally at around 10k miles, did a TB sycn and it hasn't done it since.

 

It's the PAIR system.

Mine back fired with a Delkevic pipe. I disabled the PAIR system (block off plates from TPS Parts) and it doesn't back fire anymore.

I disabled the PAIR because with it, the bike made enough noise to attract attention. I don't want to attract attention to myself, especially if I'm backing off the gas because of the cops. I try to avoid excessive noise; back fires qualify as too much noise.
