The storyline was really good. They did a good job of making you feel for the struggle of the Na'Vi. The special effects were outstanding. Watching some of the scenes in 3d made it feel like you were really there.
I'll probably go see it again but not in 3d just to experience it that way, but if you get a chance to do one or the other I'd recommend the 3d.

Saw it over the weekend..

Story - think dances with wolves, last samuri, and a bit of braveheart. Blend on high and add water. Basically.. heard it all before and in much better ways.

Script/dialogue.. is the suck. These poor actors.. who have talent.. were handed a dry script that could have been written by some high school kid.

Acting is Flat and weak. Like no one wanted to be there.

Visuals - Stunning! The designs are well thought out and the environments are beautiful and seamlessly put together. excellent!

Character animation/Mocap - since the cgi characters are entirely mocap'd, the physics behind their movements make them very realistic. even facial expressions are mocap'd making for very convincing tall blue aliens. again excellent!

3D - used effectively most of the time and it works well. Have not seen in IMAX but that would be the way to see it.

Editing could have been better. Was expecting a commercial to start a couple of times at the fadeouts :)

Result.. pretty box wrapped around an "also-ran" script. I like Cameron and I think the idea was solid, but seems like they focused to hard to make a the technology carry a weak story/script instead of having the technology enhance a good story.

Just saw it in 3D this afternoon.

Bangin movie.

I went in with less than stellar expectations though. Any movie that can hold my attention for three hours gets a decent rating right off the bat.

Unfortunately, as someone mentioned, it's nothing we haven't heard before. The green agenda in the movie made it seem more like an updated ferngully with technology and CG that really kept your attention. That said, the movie was easy to read without paying too much attention.

As noted the dialog sucked. For a movie aimed at kids, the amount of cursing was a heck of a put off. Then again, I might be considered a prude by some standards. If it were a movie for my own kids (the twinkles in my eyes), I'd hate to have to explain why they constantly were cursing for no reason. Then again, the movie stars a bunch of marines working for "the corporation" so the language isn't too surprising by marine standards.

The integration of effects and invention of unreal objects (the forest life, animals, blue team, and transports) are amazing. AMAZING. All the money was spent on CG and it shows. You get sucked right into believing and only stop when the movie is over. The sights and sounds are everything they're supposed to be according to the blue team in the movie. They really did a great job of creating another world.

Was it worth $14.50? In my book, no movie is worth $14.50 at matinee. Ever. Ever. Ever. That's a DVD. That's two cheap books. That's an oil change on the SV.

Would I see it in the theater again? Yes. lol. Hard to believe it was that good but it really was visually stunning. Award winning in the visual arena. $29.00 worth in the visual arena! lol

EDIT: Oh, and for the jar heads on the forums or the weirdos who wear purple pants, this movie is about one of your own going native. BWAH AHAHAHAHA!!!

And THAT is why I kept the glasses. I was talking to my rents about that. If they didn't charge for the glasses, I'd throw 'em back and they could recycle them. Thanks to the ridiculous charge for them, I'll keep them till I rot.

Exactly what expected. All flash, zero substance. If you're impressed by CGI this is a very pretty movie. If you're older than 10 and care about little things like story, dialogue, character development, originality and creativity... you know things that actually make a movie great... look elsewhere.

Just saw the movie in IMAX 3D. I thought it was a great movie -- granted, the storyline wasn't all that original (can you call anything truly original these days?), but I still found it very easy to become involved for nearly three hours... I think some of you are being too harsh on the characters and plot.

I tried, but I had to see Alvin and the Chipmunks with the family. On the plus side, the wife wants to go see it!

just saw it tonight.. couldn't help but try to see nipples on the native women.

o and how unsettling are those "feeler" things in their hair?

verdict: quite entertained. the best 3d parts are when the floating seeds come across the screen. you can almost touch them.

3d. Saw it. Loved it. Very entertaining. Some belief-suspension, but pretty solid for the genre.

Folks questioning the storyline need to reanalyze all the movies you've already seen and loved. You're going to find, at the core, there's only about 7 different stories. The rest is time, place, and frills. It's kind of disappointing, I agree, but yacking about it as if you're some type of film buff is laughable.

Regarding the acting, there was nothing wrong with it; it wasn't everyone's best work, I'm sure. Seems to me there were a lot of disenchanted characters.

All the similarities to other films are things the audience must be able to relate to somehow. Same thing goes for the reasoning behind having the ambassadors look like the aliens; the thought is probably that they tried to go in as humans initially and the avatars are experimental.

This film wasn't intended to be a cult film so there are some compromises to entertain a broad audience. The box office statistics prove it.
