Hey you chicagoans, what are your favorite routes in the area? Sounds like there is a lot of great riding in SE WI and Madison area (i'm not from the midwest), but those seem like full day rides and i'm wondering if there are any closer destinations for a half-day ride for those days when i'm looking to ride 4-5 hours. Any suggestions? I know Illinois doesn't exactly have the most exciting landscape...but maybe up around fox lake area?

Check out Starved Rock State Park and that area. Also there is a road north of Peoria called Illinois River Road, that area is not too bad. To be a little closer you can check out Rt. 6 from aroud Ridge Road area to Ottawa, not a bad ride. They are all west of the city but decent scenery and rural roads for the most part.

cool, thanks. peoria might be a little far (might as well go to WI) but starved rock via rt 6 sounds like a good ride. thanks for the suggestion

lets all take a ride together when it gets warm thats what i say
i'd love to, but for your sake you might want to wait until i put some more miles on my bike and lose my diapers:p

Im in for a group ride this spring. I tried to start one last year but never happened.

Nox, if you go out to Starved Rock make sure you hit Rt. 71 from Ottawa to Starved Rock. Rt. 6 is nice to Ottawa but 71 has some crazy elevation and turns just before you get to the entrance to the State Park. Be carefull and go slow, sounds like your in need of more expierience. If you look at a map of the road you can see how curvy it is.

made it out to starved rock a few weeks ago. 71 west of ottawa was awesome, but seems like a long way to go for 10 mins of twisties. rode almost 2 hours just to get out there.

Rt 6 was nice too.
