assuming that the tank is deep enough for the gauge assembly to fit, I think the rest could be trimmed to fit. Wore-case-scenario you could cut the 90 degree bend with the float off and jam a piece of cork on the end of what's left...

That's a valuable antique, worth probably ten times the starting bid. You must really want a gas gauge!
