I bought a 2003 Suzuki SV650s with full fairing from craigslist and I enjoy it very much. It has 16,700 miles when I got it. So far I have replaced the oil, air element, adjusted rear brake pedal light, clean and lube the chain.

What are the things I need to be concerned of with this bike (what is the weakest link or things that require special attention?)

How often do you change
1. spark plugs
2. sprockets and chain

thanks in advance

Welcome and Congrat's on the best SV made!

What part of the world are you from?

If it were me, I'd go with;

Oil and Filter change
New Air Filter....K&N
Spark Plugs
New Brake Fluids front/rear, I'd almost gaurantee it's bad...get a MightyVac and it's a 10 minute job.
Pull and check Brake Pads
Flush Radiator / replace coolant
Inspect the chain / sprocket. Me...I'd just go new so you know where you're at.
Valve check / adjustment.
Tank or 2 with Seafoam mixed in the fuel.

Then...on to new front springs for under $100 and then a GSXR shock. You'll be amazed at how much better your bike handles and feels. Night and Day difference!

Ohhh...and Blinker Fluid! check that, too. :vroom:

I would err on the side of caution and that the previous owner lied and didn't do any of the above. It will never hurt you to do so.

Get a hold of the Owners Manual and you will see a table for all the maintenance intervals. Buy a Service Manual, it will be your best friend when it comes to repairs.

Greetings from sunny San Diego, CA
I saw your bike in your avatar and it looks exactly like yours (mine is completely stock) :)

1. is air filter the same as the filter underneath the tank? If so I replaced that already.
2. What is blinker fluid?
3. is valve check/adjustment something you can do yourself or you need to bring it to a dealer?
4. my buddy and I checked the sprocket and chain and we found it to be in decent shape. Probably another 1000 more miles if I keep them clean and lubed

thanks for your suggestions.

Suzuki recommends new spark plugs every 7500 miles

on average chain & sprockets last 12,000-18,000, depends on how well you maintain the chain, with automatic chain oilers, chain & sprocket life can be extended to 30,000 or more miles

the weakest link is the owner/rider and lack of routine maintenance
