I found a new non current 2015 black Suzuki SV650S today at a dealer. I'm thinking about trading my 2007 Kawasaki 650R Ninja for it. I'm stoked about the Suzuki with the half fairing and V twin engine. Would there be emission controls on a Canadian model; would it effect the performance of the Suzuki compared to an older SV650S? Thank you.

I'm fairly certain the only bikes that had extra emissions equipment were those for the state of California. And even then, I believe it was simply a carbon canister for recycling engine & fuel tank vapors.

But hopefully someone with more knowledge will confirm.

The later SV engines had several subtle improvements over the earlier injected engines, such as twin spark plugs and (I believe) more refined injection systems, which made them even better to ride.

Worst case, most restrictive would be same as a California 2007 model.
There is absolutely no performance difference for street use.
Also the bike will have ABS as standard.
It should have a sticker on the frame specifying the emission standard.

"Non-current" can be a PITA, be aware of possible state requirements.
For example, if you are in California, you will have to pay a charge identical to purchasing the bike new at MSRP. That would be a $500 minimum

How long would it take to get used to the clip ons? The salesman said just a week or so. The salesman said the Ninja 650R is a better sport touring bike, but I've had the bike for 12 years and would like to try something different.

You can get Bar raisers if you don't like the setup but as you have been used to a different engine configuration Don't! Wheelie these engines as it starves the Front cylinder.

But DO get used to and use the Awesome,"Engine Braking" of these engines

The key thing with getting used to the clip-ons is to use your back and core muscles to support yourself on the bike, and keep weight off your forearms and wrists.

I moved from a naked classic to the SVS and it does feel like a workout at first, but you do get comfortable with it after a few weeks.

They also make clip ons with a rise that work too. You would need longer cables and brake hose though.
