Changing oil filter every 3k?

Would you guys change the oil filter with every oil change if dine every 3k? Maybe I mis read but someone had suggested that at 3k it's not worth changing and was hoping if someone could clarify.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

Don't know about Gen2, but for Gen3 the service manual says to do the filter every other oil change. Then again there's no harm is doing it more frequently, just a little added expense.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

I personally do an oil filter and oil at 3000 miles.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

For the Gen 2 bikes (K3 onward), Suzuki's service schedule is an oil change every 6,000km / 3,750 miles, with a filter change every 3rd oil change (i.e. every 18,000km / 11,250 miles).

Some people change the filter with every oil change, some people change the filter every second oil change, some people follow Suzuki's schedule. The choice is yours.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

I recommend you change it at every oil change.

Mainly because half a quart of old oil will stay in your bike if you don't change it.

Why go through the effort and expense of a oil change and leave half a quart of dirty old oil in your bike? Spend the extra $5-$10 and change your filter.

I don’t understand Suzuki advising to change filter every other change. Clutch debris alone is reason enough to change the filter. For under $10, I change mine every time.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

I think there's some argument where an oil filter actually filters better as it ages (up to a certain point, of course) so that a fresh filter with each oil change can allow some small particles to float around for a while.
Imagine, like, cheesecloth vs a screen door. A screen door can still let through quite a bit of tiny particles, but as it gets clogged up it might resemble something closer to cheesecloth, which should filter better. (This is a pretty crappy anology, I know!) As long as full oil pressure can still be maintained, cheesecloth is better than a screen door. At least -- that's the argument/theory.

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

The problem is that when there is too much trash, the filter will bypass. Now zero filtering occurs. The new filter media will not let very big particles through at all- especially top of the line filters with good media. Modern oils, especially synthetic, are exceptional at keeping particulates in suspension rather than depositing them inside the engine.

Maybe it has to do with them knowing a thing or two about their engines

Re: Changing oil filter every 3k?

Just a hypothesis, but tell me if this makes sense... Plenty of car filters out there that are just as small as ours. They currently spec 6k-10k miles between oil/filter changes, so the media itself should be good for that long if the engine is in good shape.
I suspect we actually change our oil sooner simply because of the higher operating rpm range combined with the acceleration rate of our engines. This can lead to shearing of the oil and consumption of the additives due to mechanical breakdown of the polymer chains. So the 'short' oil change interval is more about replenishing the oil properties than it is about removing contamination and filter itself should still have life in it.
Just an idea... but yeah, oil filters are cheap so why not?
