mineral vs synthetic oil (2nd gen)

Hey guys!
I know the sticky says either or and that it depends on preferences but I need to ask:

This is my first time doing maintenance on my suzuki sv650s 2010 (2nd gen). The guy i bought it from told me that I need to use 10w40 MINERAL oil. He said that he used to use synthetic and the clutch ended up slipping and he had tp change his whole clutch (800$ repair). But at the same time, he also bought it use, and he aint no mechanic.

When I went to the shop, I told him i wanted to buy mineral oil for my sv. Then he started swearing by the synthetic oil and how he used to put that in his sv650s 2nd gen also.

WHAT SHOULD I BUY. im so scared for my clutch to slip and end up having to do reparations for that. Synthetic vs mineral?? thanks!

Re: mineral vs synthetic oil (2nd gen)

Your guy doesn't know squat...

If he used the wrong synthetic oil, like some automotive oils with "Friction Modifiers", there could a slippage problem but that's even questionable.

Synthetics are going to do everything better than conventional oils.

You don't want just any oil, but there are many choices. The least expensive, and most common, is a diesel oil like Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. It's a lower level synthetic, and safe for cycle engines and clutches.

The next step up is a "4T" oil like Mobil 1 4T 10W-40. You want to make sure any oil is "motorcycle specific", "4T", and JASO MA2. Don't use any standard automotive oils. I've run Mobil 1 4T in my SV for years. Rotella is fine, but I've found that shifting in the SV degrades quickly, so I use the Mobil 1.

I run Rotella in all my other motorcycle engines, and it's fine.

What Jay V said. Anything else is just noise.
