Gen 2 Helmet Holders - Flawed Design?

The fairing on my '05 sv650s has cracked from using the helmet holders that are built in underneath the passenger seat. I haven't found much talk abou these online and the owner's manual, page 3-18 merely says "Hook your helmet on the helmet holder and lock the seat". I have a Shoei rf-1200 and am looping the metal hoops onto the helmet holder, then draping the helmet on the side of the bike as expected. See imgur album:

Am I using these wrong, or is this just a poor design that will usually result in a cracked fairing? I really liked these when I first got the bike and thought it was a great convenient feature, but now I have a big hole in the fairing that will let water and rain into the compartment under the seat unless I tape it up or find some other solution. Has anyone figured out a good way to use the helmet holders without breaking the fairings? Are there any clever aftermarket products I can get that will fix this part of the bike up?

Re: Gen 2 Helmet Holders - Flawed Design?

Looks like the 2nd D-ring smashed into the plastic.

On the rare occasions I've used this, I put both D-rings on the hook. However, I find it's a hassle to take gloves off and place them on the seat, get key out of ignition and put it in the rear lock, remove the rear seat then realize I have nowhere to put it, hear the gloves slide off the seat (one on each side of the bike...but hey, now I have a spot to put the rear seat), remove helmet, fiddle with the D-rings until they slip on, feel the rear seat slide and hit my foot...

Bend down, grab the rear seat, snap it on, remove key, get one glove, walk around to other side, get other glove, etc etc.

I usually just bring my helmet inside wherever I go. It fits fine in a grocery cart, or on a shelf or desk.

Won't get damaged or stolen, either.

Re: Gen 2 Helmet Holders - Flawed Design?

Been using mine for years without issue,.i only use one ring and it can be a bit of a pain but it works without damaging anything. My wife's Honda came with a cable (as the cbr500r has an even worse design) and that would make it easier. Just loops through d-rings and hooks over the hook under the seat...less chance of an unyielding d-ring cracking bodywork.
Looks like you're using it right, but it is tight and ff could be out got twisted and...snap.
In terms of fixing it, you might try a fiberglass repair kit. Lots of sanding and painting fun...or hit the wreckers, buy new replacement piece, etc.

The 2017 doesn't have a helmet holder at all. I used the one on my 2007 a few times without issue...hooked the d-ring to it just like in the picture. It's a bummer what happened to your fairing matteblacksmoke.

I think someone experienced with body work might be able to put that piece on. Looks like you could maybe epoxy it back into place since it's sort of hidden by the seat. Maybe not, just a thought.

My helmets' D-rings always sat entirely inside the tail fairing and the seat and fairing just have to clear the strap.

Yea I also hook both rings onto the helmet holder.

My buddy Kim bought a new Shoei helmet and they replaced the rings with a racket lock setup?

Mostly I just take my helmet with me. I envision people tampering with it while I'm away and shudder to think of the things I might unknowingly put on my head when I come back.

Thanks for the input all. Getting 2 D rings on and off is a major hassle so I may just stop using this, or maybe build in some sort of rubber gasket that flexes when I use the helmet holder and keeps water out. I enjoy the convenience. The cables some of you suggested are also a good idea.

I bought the one on Amazon because it is a steel cable between two web straps.
