Alternator output

Does anyone know the alternator output on the Gen 3? I’ve got heated grips and a heated jacket on order. Max draw for both at the same time would be 122 watts.

Re: Alternator output

Hi. According to the Shop Manual you get 14-15.5 volts at 5000rpm. And not to be too big of a coont, but they call it a generator in the booky book. I dono.

Let us know how the add on stuff works, I'm curious myself.

Re: Alternator output

Thanks for that picture. 375 watts should be plenty.

I don't know whether to call it a generator, stator, alternator, or something else. Motor driven electrical supplier and battery charger, lol.

Just curious what set of heated grips are you using and do you like them? I've heard of Oxford among other brands but mostly for the Gen 2.

I'm looking to get both a set of heated grips and a jacket for the winter as it seems you have.

Re: Alternator output

I ended up with the Oxford Touring grips. So far, so good. I like them a lot. A set of Barkbuster Blizzards has made all the difference along with the grips. Nice and toasty. I bought a Hotwired heated jacket. Its working great as well. Rode to work yesterday morning and it was 35F. Averaged about 55-60 mph. I was very comfortable the whole time (25 minutes). I'm pretty much set for anything down to freezing. I don't really like to ride below 32F. Too many bridges and overpasses that like to have freezing fog.

Good to hear especially about the hand guards too as that would be a logical match for the new grips and jacket. Probably nice as well for any of pavement adventures and protecting those levers in case of a light fall or tip over.

I like the Vstrom guards. 2011 (I think?) model are great for winter riding in NC...

Re: Alternator output

It's always a good thing to have a voltmeter on the bike! You might be discharging the battery under certain conditions and without monitoring the charging you'll have no way to know...which could have bad consequences. If the charging system should fail in some way it's better to catch it as early as possible....and reduce the drain on the battery (switch to kill headlamp/s for example) to extend the run time to hopefully get you where you're going without needing to push or a tow.
