Are hardtail LSR's common? High speed + no suspension strikes me as a crazy idea...

I can't speak universally, having only made one attempt, but if I were building from scratch - I'd go with a hard tail. Remember, we're riding on salt which feels like a well packed beach. It is not groomed but as the winter standing water dries up it is left pretty smooth albeit with a few grooves here and there.

The ability to get it lower makes more of difference (less frontal area) and while hard to calculate suspension eats a tiny bit of HP.

As long as there is no cross wind it's pretty easy to ride. The rookie mistake is after the last marker folks on bikes get desensitized as to how fast they are going as they start to turn back. I avoided that mistake but still looked like a rookie when it took another mile to make the turn.
