No enough clearance in the rear, tried to run a rear disc but ended up cutting into the wiring harness.

But, I'm running regen braking in the rear, more than enough. Its even stronger than my front hydraulic disc brakes.

Does the regen activates when you pull the brake lever?

Yes it does, its hooked up to my rear brake lever. (The sensor is integrated into the brake lever).

When I pulled the lever, it kills the throttle, the motor acts as a brake (it brakes hard).

My display then shows negative watts, power is being put back into the batteries.

Saves wear and tear on the front brakes.

I would like to build one of these in the future and take it to the track.

Re: My 50mph electric bike

I'll borrow your thread..

I've been interested in electric bikes for about six years now. At that time I wanted to convert my 125cc Aprilia to electric power. I didn't have enough money at the time (I still don't) so I've not yet done a project like that. Then I got into multicopters and found all these cool electric motors, LiPo batteries etc. I wanted to test what would happen if I mount two outrunners into a bicycle. Here's the result (still work in progress):

http://youtu.be/alx8EdA4zMk

Motors: NTM 50-60 270KV x2
ECS's: Hobbyking YEP 150A x2
Batteries: Zippy Flightmax 6s 20C 3000mAh x6 in parallel.

Re: My 50mph electric bike

Very nice is that a 80T Sprocket you have in the rear? What top speed are you hitting?

Here's my work in progress track bike during testing.

Re: My 50mph electric bike

It's a 70T sprocket. My gears are 11-32 and 11-70. This limits my top speed to 40km/h (25mph) when the motor is hitting 80% of the theoretical (no load) maximum speed.

I did couple test runs with sofstart enabled in esc's. Then I tried to disable the feature. I don't know why, but one of the esc's applied full operating voltage (24V) between two terminals of the motor. This made it burn up with flames. Eventually I got it programmed and I'm now waiting for a replacement motor.

It will be interesting to see how quick will it accelerate with full power. Now it only peaked at 70A on full throttle acceleration and 50A at top speed. Motor specs say it would handle 90A continius current each. ESC's are capable of 150A continuous each and battery pack 380A.

Great meeting you last Saturday! Have fun on the Zero? Addictive...

I think I found a great base for a future project bike...

Long travel suspension, fat tires (5" wide, 100mm rims)... Perfect for cruising on the beach in the sand... Woohoo!

Same here, the Zero was fun, but so was the BMW i3, incredible torque.

I'm looking at buying a Zero for my daily commute, especially since the company I work for might be relocating. The fat bike looks good, I built one for a friend. Its a fun bike to ride.
