Myself, I would paint it close to stock or at least in period colors. Then, I would put longer rear shocks (Works) and a better, later front end ... without getting too modern. Then you can go thrash it off road.

Check out this website for inspiration:

What if I made the colors exactly like the '68? I can deal with pearl white, but that orange metallic color that is on my DT looks like crap, IMNSHO.

I was thinking I would paint it white! I love that paint job ... it says DT1!

Some pictures from the AHRMA race at Willow Springs Raceway last weekend. Sorry for the not so great quality, camera and operator weren't very good.

I'll let you in on a little secret. My RD was originally a purple 1974 RD350A. Its now painted to look like a 1975 RD350B.

So I am no stickler for originality ... Unless of course the bike is very rare or valuable.

Solidone ... check out those links on the preceding page if you missed them.

How's this? Good compromise?

The white on the skid plate and pegs is supposed to match the fenders. Same matte aluminum finish. Kickstand will probably stay black, unless i figure out how to match it to the brake lever.

sry bout the thread jack. hey... it's still a 2-stroke...

EDIT: I just remembered that the pegs and levers are steel. so no silver pegs or kick stand. Maybe I stick with the black on those parts and do the skid plate black too.

SolidOne - how do I learn to "paint" bikes in different colors?

Sorry guys - I don't want to hijack, so I'm including one of my favorite designs:

Photo chop it.... j/k

Practice practice practice. The "Automotive how-to" section in a book store is a good place to look. Yeah, you can find all that info online probably, but I still suggest a book. Can't cost more that $20. If it does, you are paying to much for that book.

Supplies needed:

-HPLV spray gun. $15~20 at HF will start you off.

-Decent sized Compressor with separator and regulator, you might want to double up on the filters or air pressure regulators with a small units attached to the gun. they sell that at HF to.

- Masking tape, masking paper, some plastic sheeting to cover for a makshift paint booth.

-Exhaust fan is not needed, but if you can borrow one or get one used of Craigs list it would be awesome.

- Sandpaper of different grits and more sand paper of different grits.

-tack cloth (it's in the paint section at any auto parts place nex to the bondo) It's like a sticky cheese cloth looking thing folded into a 3" square, yellow or blue usually.

- mixing cups and stiring rods. (glass jars and disposable chopsticks work fine)

- Paints and stuff. reducer, paint, prime, clear, etc etc. Go to a real auto paint place and they have all the supplies you need. And ask the dude a lot of questions. The paint guy, usually, know his sh1t.

- Time and patience.... then some more time and patience.

- Oh, and a infrared heater if you got one handy. Or just paint during high noon. Let it cure in the sun... It's good.

Hope that helps you. Go get a book on the subject and ask the paint guy questions and you should be red-to-go.
