You can take the "just do what the rule book" says approach, or do some
extra work and make your machine much safer for you and the other racers
out there. Not only that, but it gives less things to worry about before
and during a race.
Here are some general rules, the specific list will follow. I wire:
1) any bolt with fluid behind it
2) anything that would cause a bad crash if it came loose/off mid race
3) several things that, if they came loose would end my race (example,
shift lever)
4) if in doubt, wire it
Here's a list of things I wired (thanks to many on the SV list that helped
contribute most of this). As you can see, there's lots to wire and this
list looks large, but once you get the hang of it, it really doesn't take
that long.
- oil drain bolt
- oil filter
- oil filler cap
- 5 bolts on the bottom of the case, all/most of which have oil behind
them (see general rule #4)
- oil pressure switch (RTV ok here)
- both cam chain tensioners (3 bolts on each)
- radiator drain bolt
- radiator cap
- all coolant lines (yes, even the ones under the carbs)
- all bolts around the water pump
- thermostat
- fan switch (RTV ok here)
- all banjo bolts
- all caliper mounting bolts
- Brake torque arm (both ends)
- exhaust hangers
- exhaust header bolts
- exhaust springs/clamps
- footpegs
- footpeg brackets
- clip-ons
- shift lever knuckle (where it attaches to the shift shaft)
- grips
- front axle
- axle pinch bolts
- rear axle nut cotter pin replaced with a hitch pin wire it to the swingarm
so I don't lose it wire it shut to it doesn't come off
- steering damper (optional)
