$3 Fender Eliminator

For those out there interested, I have devised a $3 eliminator kit you can pick up at your local hardware store. What's needed? Two 1-1/2" #10-32 Machine Screws, Four #10-32 nuts and two 2" Mending Plates. All can be purchased for under three bucks!

What do you do? Well, get a Dremal Tool (I used a steak knife!) and cut away the fender all the way up and as close as you dare to the rear molding. then carefully cut up the seam on both sides of the undertail that is used as the mount for the light junction box. Bend that part down and remove the screws (save for mounting the turn signals). The box can be mounted in the glove box (I just use the tool bag to hold it in place!) To remove the turn signals just drill out the rivet. You have to bend the reflector bracket 90 degrees. Now remove the two small screws holding the molding in place. Place the light brackets in place (you might have to cut out a notch) and use the two larger screws that used to hold the junction box in the same hole. Now see how easy it is to bend the plastic up and towards the tail light. If it is still stiff, just cut a notch at the end of the cuts. Place two 1-1/2" bolts up threw the holes that used to hold the junction box. Loosely twist a nut (or a couple of washers) on the bolt. Place a 2" mending plate (Hardware person should know what this is) on then another bolt. Now work the mending plate in place facing outwards. Working with a small crescent wrench inside and a screwdriver outside, tighten the bolts. Repeat process for other side.

To give a finishing look, you can get a small "L" bracket, attach a reflector, and then drill a whole at the center of this piece you bent upwards, and attach assembly with a 1" #10-32 bolt and nut. Whole process took me about two hours (would have been quicker if I didn't use a steak knife)! I love the looks and can't get over the price! Sure beats $50-$100 for a mail order kit!

Oh, another thing. You might be wondering about the license plate and light. I previously moved those up to the front of the fender. You will see in my pics. Cost for that? Not a damn penny!
