2014 VStrom 1000 -- A Cotender?

(That should be contender in the heading)

So, from what we know about the upcoming 2014 VStrom 1000, will it be a real contender in the Adventure Touring market, or only a lower cost alternative?

Now, I don't think it is fair to think it will be able to take on the new BMW R1200GS, simply given the level of sophistication the price tag allows, about what about the others in the category vying for runner-up.

Let the conversation begin.

V-Strom 650 owner/fanboi here. Dare I say I do not care for the look of the concept they've shown. I prefer the old fugly ducklying design.

I'm warming up to a liter size bike again. Love my V-Strom, just wish it had a bit more punch sometimes.

I don't care about the BMW 1200GS or any of the rest of those bikes. They are far, far too complicated, expensive, and all around excessive for me.

The concept bike looks great IMO. I'd love a Super Tenere but would put a new strom in the fleet instead if the price was right for the package.

V-stroms will always be a contender in the adventure market by the mere fact they are the budget bike of the market

The subframe / pillion pegs / exhaust hanger look kind of twiggy on the concept.

I like stroms. I want a strom.

Someone on another forum pointed out how low the exhaust is. Commented that it looks more luggage friendly.

Re: 2014 VStrom 1000 -- A Cotender?

Great bike for the money. The DL650 is considered by many owners as the best all-round bike on the market and prefer it over the 1000 because the smaller engine seems to produce a slightly more balanced package. That said, for those wanting more power, it's definitely hard, if not impossible, to find a better alternative.

Just checked Cycle-Ergo and compared the 2010 DL1000 numbers against the 2014 FZ-09. The FZ-09 seat height is about 1.5" lower, Forward lean of 0 degrees for the DL and 2 degrees for the FZ-09 (6'1" rider) and Knee angle of 89 degrees for the DL1000 and 76 degrees for the FZ-09. Given the price/performance numbers for the FZ-09 and it's lower weight, I am anxious to actually sit on the FZ-09 and wonder if it might not provide some competition for the DL1000, although the DL will admittedly have the advantage when not on paved roads. The V-Stroms have always seemed a little top-heavy to me so the lighter weight of the FZ and abundant power make me wonder.

I wish manufactures would stop with "the beak" on "adventure" motorcycles, especially this one. It doesn't work like an offroad fender and there is already a fender covering the front tire on the majority of them.

Re: 2014 VStrom 1000 -- A Cotender?

As Randy said above, the Vstrom will always be a contender just because it is way cheaper than its European counterparts. That said, I have taken my Vee to places where I never thought I could and made it safe and sound and had lots of fun in the process... I've never felt like I need something more "high end".

The DL650 vs DL1000 debate will always exists but I think both are fantastic bikes for the money, they just have different characters to suit different expectations.

I think this new version of the DL1000 will sell like hot cakes and I cannot wait to ride one.

Did I mention the Vstrom is a blast to ride in the twisties?
