Rear wheel Lock

Hello
this morning, i went for a test ride, and as I was slowing down coming off the freeway, going about 20-25 my Rear wheel locked I had to grab the clutch to prevent a low side. what could cause this? I have not done anything to the bike
other then messing with the carburetor work. and then it did it again 20 feet down again.

Re: Rear wheel Lock

I was in 2nd or 3rd gear under 2.5K and it locked and rear went to the left. Could it be because I am tuning the carbs?

Re: Rear wheel Lock

I wouldn't suspect the carbs sounds like a bind up in the transmission

Re: Rear wheel Lock

no not carb related, could be brakes barely dragging enough to build up temp in the system, eventually causing fluid to boil and expand and ultimately lock up.

Re: Rear wheel Lock

were you downshifting while holding the rear brake? the combination of the 2 could have put enough stress on it to lock it up. its happened to me..

Re: Rear wheel Lock

I have the same nasty habit, I hold The rear brake while down shifting. I've locked the rear tire a couple of times but thankfully have had my hand on the clutch and pulled in quick enough to stop the tire before it slides 5 inches.
I've always ridden with no back brake, just a habit I built up, now I'm trying to break that habit and sometimes I forgot to release it while down shifting.

Easy to do, don't worry too much, just remember, the minute that clutch comes in to down shift, your foot should come off the rear brake.

Re: Rear wheel Lock

Are you giving a shot of gas to down shift...dont know your riding history...but a common problem with newer riders to be more on the rear brake than what is needed. On a turn...down shifting very little rear brake. Couple that with no reving a bit...recipe for trouble.

Re: Rear wheel Lock

That doesn't really sound like the rear tire chirp you might get from down shifting to me. You mean it locked and stayed locked for more than a split second? Was it free rolling again right after you pulled the clutch?

And for the record, getting the clutch in might not be the way to go. I learned, once the rear is locked, keep it locked and ride the front till you stop. Done it twice now when I got a little to heavy on the rear brake. If you let the rear gain traction again, it might not be pointing the same way as the front which causes the bike to do a nasty little "snap" as it realigns and can cause you to basically pop off the top.
