Re: Shotgun Suggestions?
Here is a sweet home defense shotgun:
The UTS-15 tactical 12 ga. pump shotgun is a patented, ground-up design utilizing fiber reinforced polymers for over 85% of its parts and is the first such firearm to have the receiver molded completely from polymer. At only 28.5” in overall length and weighing only 6.9 lbs, but with top-mounted alternately feeding magazines providing a total capacity of 15 rounds, the UTS-15 has truly broken new ground in tactical shotgun design. As standard features on the Military & Police Model and separately purchased accessories for civilians, there is a built in point-and-shoot impact centered, focused-beam LED spotlight, adjustable laser sight, flip-up large aperture peep or V rear sight, a glow-in-the-dark bead front sight and a screw in, breaching muzzle extension.

My former under-bed accessory was a Mossberg 835 ultimag. I tried a 3 1/2 load once. Didn't care for it at all. It was a fantastic rig with normal loads in it, but I'd prefer an auto if trying the super mags again. I ended up selling it during tough times, now I keep a .357 in the night stand. Well, I always have. I just liked the thought of using a cannon to protect my wife and myself over a measly little revolver. And to the birdshot naysayers, I stand behind the little peas. A 3 1/2 inch load of number 6 from a few feet away with end ANY altercation without killing the neighbors five houses down.

This is what getting peppered with birdshot at under 10' does to someone:
Lots of bruising and dozens of pellets in his face, neck, and shoulder. Even though it wasn't a direct hit he was still hit with a good percentage of the shot and there was not even enough force to knock a 75 year old man down when he wasn't expecting it. About the only reliable way to drop someone with birdshot is to take out their eyes or shoot them at point blank range.

Most cases in the house ARE point blank. Simply pointing the business end at someone, no matter what the size of the canon is typically enough to cause them to void their bowels.

Well, 10 feet is pretty point-blank, don't you think?
So, what happens when they don't void their bowels, and continue the attack, gambling that the person holding the firearm either doesn't have the balls to squeeze the trigger, or was dumb enough to load their shotgun with birdshot?
I guess maybe the flash and bang would be enough to momentarily disorient them , and you could then finish them off with a nice series of butt-strokes, but if you are one of those idjits who think just a pistol grip is good enough on a shoulder weapon (I know you aren't jb this is a general comment), 'cause you saw it in a movie and it looked cool, you couldn't even do that.

Re: Shotgun Suggestions?
Yeah. I guess even good weapons are useless in the hands of the stupid.
One of my reasons for the 20 gauge is when I finally can talk the missus into allowing a weapon in the house, I want a shot gun she can handle comfortably. She's 4'9" and on a "fat" day weighs 110#.

As someone who was in the military I am very surprised by this attitude. Anyone in the military or law enforcement should know how many people are killed (often with their own weapon) by pulling out a gun and not killing their target. Even little kids are taught to only point guns at things that they want to kill, at least that's how I was taught around guns.
As some of you have seen on here, I openly laugh at people who fantasize about home protection and feel the need to carry firearms at all times for their safety. I believe that a good sized, well trained dog is a far better form of protection, but it's not something I really ever think about besides storing my shotgun in the bedroom closet with a tube full of #4 buck after each hunting trip.
Striga - one aspect that has not been mentioned here is that defensive shootings with sporting firearms are often looked at in a much better light by local DAs/police than those done with "tacti-cool," badass looking guns. A lot of anti-gun people look at a blacked out, military looking weapon and think the only reason someone would get one is to shoot someone.
Something as insignificant at the visual difference between this:
and this:
could really change the amount of justification you have to do with the local authorities, even though they are basically the same gun.

Guess we better pull out all the anecdotal cases of people that were shot with bigger guns too since not everyone dies, gets seriously injured or runs away, they must not be any good!

What attitude is that? Guns are like dicks--don't whip it out unless you plan on using it.
Pointing a weapon at a person isn't a guaranty that you're going to perforate their hide. It's a promise to perforate their hide should they continue approaching.

Re: Shotgun Suggestions?
I wish someone had advised me to get a 20 gauge for home defense. After taking my "tactical" 12 gauge to the shooting range, I realized it was a little bit of "over-kill", heh heh, pun intended. Oh well, at least there's no one in the house except the wife and me so I don't have to worry about blowing holes in the walls. Don't forget to mount a tactical flash light to the barrel.
