Agreed, I've put thousands of rounds through all of my guns, training in the Military and some at the local gun club.

Re: Shotgun Suggestions?

Your common criminal is a giant *****. They carry again because they are mad they have a small *****. They will run at the sight of a gun and only pick on people they can push around. The second they see a gun, they run away and crap their pants. There is no scenario where your common home owner needs to prepare for a seriously trained home invader. If they are seriously trained and you arent, you are screwed without a top of the line security system. Pull out the shotgun, most will run. Pepper them with bird shot and the rest will run or lay there and bleed. They arent holding the gun and trying to kill you. They are freaking out because they were just shot. Those of you that have been trained by the police, military etc are trained for people with serious training not for the common criminal ***** that is going to try and rob someones house. Having a stinking home security sign outside or a dog is enough to deter most criminals.

As a former common criminal, ROFL. You just don't know what you don't know.

For anyone else paying attention, please, please, PLEASE do not base your assessment of criminals on the small population of stupid miscreants who get caught and put on television. Having a gun for self defense is the same as choosing a helmet to protect your head, you don't equip yourself for what is most likely to happen (being hit in the head by bugs, birds, rain drops and small rocks), you equip yourself to survive the worst possible [realistic] scenario (going down as speed in a motorcycle crash). The same applies to guns.

That's a very poor assumption to bet your life on.

Now that's just asinine.

Have you ever seen someone get shot? Barring a CNS disrupting hit or on that puts the DRT, many don't even know they're shot, they just know they were shot at and that's when they fire back. Then the blood loss causes them to get woozy and start to panic...that combined with the adrenaline dump makes for some potentially chaotic circumstances. You are in serious need of an education in these matters before you go off giving advice.

Lol, lay down and bleed to death...lmao.

If you've never had any training, then how in the world do you know what we train for?

Depends on the type of robbery involved, but again, that's a bad assumption to make.

Sure is, but you don't arm yourself for the type that can be deterred by a sign (most won't **** with a dog though), otherwise you wouldn't be armed...a sign costs less than a gun and doesn't come with a lawyer bill attached every time you use it in self defense.

Respectfully, bull****. In so assuming, you have already lost ANY engagement you may conceive being in. If you aren't prepared to kill an intruder do not even think of bringing a gun to the fight.

The NUMBER ONE rule of home defense: get everyone to the same room with only one door in and out. Lock that door, get everyone behind something solid and get your gun trained on that door. If the ****er is dumb enough to come through that door you can bet your ass that he is going home in a body bag. He made the conscious decision to come into MY house and made the conscious decision to attempt to harm my family. There is NO QUESTION because there simply is no other acceptable alternative.

You're wasting your breath, er, fingertips. He won't open his eyes or his mind to anything anyone else says. He has already stated in other threads that he has to figure it out for himself. Hopefully, he will never be in a situation that teaches him how wrong he is about this.

This is a more reasonable approach to home defense for the anecdotal "common criminal". Most of us aren't equipped to clear a single room, let aloe an entire home even if we are familiar with it. Guns and equipment get hung up on various things (doorknobs, banisters, lamps and coat racks etc...) when you're trying to move fast under a high level of stress. It's all too easy to get caught on something, alert the intruder to your presence when it's not advantageous for you or even fall and injure yourself. Also, it's going to be a rare circumstance that would cause someone to try and break down a door to get to you, knowing that you may be armed and have already dialed 9-1-1 (make sure that room has a phone in it). I can see extreme (albeit likely rare) situations where this plan might be a bad idea (some psycho who decides to set your house on fire) and I personally always have an escape route (rope ladder and a window at the very least if I can't just jump from every story) if I can manage to have any say in it, but by and large, at least this constitutes a plan (no matter what gun you arm yourself with).

Some alternatives are finding choke points where your intruders will be funneled to if they want to progress to your family's location and preparing to fight there, allowing yourself cover and the ability to retreat quickly if necessary. That requires a bit more planning and training (either running drills on your own or getting instruction).

It's sad to think that many figure if they buy a gun then they're safe...there's a lot more to it than that.

Re: Shotgun Suggestions?

To answer the original OP's question, there is no one shotgun that will fulfill all roles desired, so you will need to prioritize. The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are going to be your best bet though

The successful one happened in broad daylight between me leaving for work and my rommie getting home. She was recently burglarized again (in the same house), while her, her now husband and his kids were not home. The chance you will have to confront someone much less someone armed is slim, the chance you will confront someone armed that is prepared to use it is extremely slim.

I'm not saying it is impossible to get into a fire fight with a robber but 99% of the time you hear about someone confronting a robber with a gun the homeowner wins. If they are looking to do an armed robbery they will just go hit a convenience store, bank or other shop and get cash.

My work location and another branch in the area have been robbed at gun point. We now have armed security, I can promise it won't happen again because they are looking for a weak target not a gun fight. Just having the presence of the security guards is usually enough.
