Mileage before rebuild.

About how many miles can you get out of a sv engine before you need to rebuild it?

Re: Mileage before rebuild.

So many variables...

It all depends on how well it has been maintained. Some guy posted no long ago that he reached 80k + miles on his SV without having to do any major work on it.

Summarize...

Oil changes = yes please
Wheelies = no thanks

Do that and you'll get plenty of miles on those bulletproof engines.

Re: Mileage before rebuild.

I have read about a bunch of people on this forum that have well over 60k on these engines only doing oil changes and valve checks. Treat them well and they should last.

Re: Mileage before rebuild.

I like to think I'm pushing the envelope of what the 1000cc engine can do. She's got just over 57,000 miles along with 10 trackdays so far with 2 more by the end of the year. All I do is change oil and the filter and have checked the valves twice since I picked up the bike at 18000 miles. Never left me stranded yet...

Re: Mileage before rebuild.

at 135k, my SV needs new valves & guides, cam chains & oil pump,

pistons, rings, bearings are fine

serviced 100% by dealer at recommended intervals (3500-4000 miles) no more, no less

I'm hoping my V-strom 1000 will go 200k+

You're due for a valve check. If you are at all competent with tools you can do it yourself.

More than likely the valve clearances will be in spec, though.
