PB crew = Performance Bike?

Yes, that's it. JackLeclaire, Number6, Guzzirider, et al.

So RD what do you think of that YZR-E?

So RD what do you think of that YZR-E?

Its badass, no doubt (love the giant one-off radiators!) but I am more happy to see the Dr John Moto Guzzi shots.

For some reason, I havent seen that bike in years.

I watched it race at Loudon and Daytona way back when. It it one of those bikes (and stories) that got me into twins in a big way.

Different strokes!

Tell us more about Dr. John. I read over at PB (where I borrowed those pics from) one of his claims to fame was simply fitting bigger fuel tanks so they didn't have to stop to refuel as often.

Tell us more about Dr. John. I read over at PB (where I borrowed those pics from) one of his claims to fame was simply fitting bigger fuel tanks so they didn't have to stop to refuel as often.

Dr. John Wittner was the racing dentist from Pennsylvania ... though he was trained as an engineer.

He went endurance racing with an old (improved) Guzzi Lemans and won the AMA US Endurance championship in 1984 and 1985.
http://books.google.com/books?id=6PkDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA37&lpg=PA37&dq=1985+endurance+champion+guzzi&source=bl&ots=s_hCgnI3-P&sig=QgCId-5wOECWQEqkKv5u7cH5r4Q&hl=en&ei=pIDkSrqvH47RlAeKqPSKBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Impressed, the factory gave him a then new, 8 valve motor and Dr. John built a competitive race bike with it, winning the 1987 Battle of the Twins class in AMA against Jimmy Adamo on the Ducati and Gene Church on the Lucifer's Hammer Harley Davidson amongst many others. His rider was Doug Brauneck.

He is credited with developing the updated Guzzi sport chassis with its cantilever swingarm which was later used on the production Daytona 1000 (and most other modern Guzzis as well I believe)

He was hired by Guzzi and worked there for many years. His race bike still graces the entryway to the Guzzi museum.

A legend amongst Guzzisti!

Before the second world war, DKW was one of the biggest motorcycle factories in the world. DKW was running a very successful racing department and winning nearly every race in the 175cc, 250cc, 350cc, 500cc and the sidecar classes. It had one of the best racing teams in the world. At that time DKW had been competing in the European championships - there had been no worldchampion races - and many drivers had won the crown for DKW. Drivers who wanted to win the European championship had first to beat the racing motorcycles from DKW and their drivers. DKW was integrated in the Auto Union GmbH and also produced cars.

It looks like increased contrast with a touch of exposure and brightness to balance it and possibly some saturation, too. I just did it to another image to test and got a similar effect.

It's one of those things where you have to modify good, color accurate photos to make them look older and classic. The green bike may actually be an old picture scanned in. The idea is similar to musical artists who add static to their music tracks because the audio is too clean.

Does that mean we may soon see the single cylinder 4stroke 500cc Mito in the US!??

No, MV is for sale.

That's right - that one had the Husky engine. Husky got sold off and it killed the 500 single Mito project.

Europe has the same bike as a 125 2-stroke. It won a recent comparison over Honda, Yamaha, Aprilia, and maybe another 125 - not sure who all markets them in Europe.

Magazine Review:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d58/RD350b/Cafe/midcover_rough_5-1.jpg

Well I finally bit the bullet and subscribed to the new American published, vintage bike magazine, Moto Retro Illustrated, put out by former Motorcyclist Magazine editor, Mitch Boehm.

I had really enjoyed the first 3 issues of Boehm's earlier spin-off magazine, Motorcyclist Retro. Unfortunately, it was killed it off by the corporate bean counters in the face of a bad economy (even though it was selling well?).

Now publishing on his own, the first issue of the renamed effort has come out and I must say that I am very pleased with it.

I have been reading all manner of motorcycle magazines ... modern, race, vintage, dirt, American, British etc ... for years. There are very few bikes I have not seen, or stories I have not heard, numerous times before. However, I found Moto Retro Review to be fresh, offering several interesting stories and retrospectives that I truly enjoyed.

There is a great article on the Hodaka Super Rat, a bike which I was well aware of, but knew little about. Additionally for dirt bike fans, there is a fascinating piece on the first Mono-shock equipped MXer, from its invention, to its eventual acceptance.

My favorite article is the cover story outlining the history of the original Eddie Lawson replica. Not only is it a story that I had never really heard before (in depth anyway), but there is also a side article on the Kawasaki S1 KZ1000 based production racer, a bike that I somehow never knew even existed!

The neatest thing perhaps about this magazine is that it caters to American enthusiasts and our history here, exploring motorcycling as it was in the States during the 60's, 70's and 80's. It covers vintage street, dirt, classic racing and my other great love, vintage mini-bikes! Its all about RDs, CBs, KZs, DTs, XR75s and all manner of other cool stuff that we all enjoy right here in this thread.

If you like this thread, particularly the vintage stuff, and want to learn more about the past ... or if you just want to support a cool magazine, published right here in the USA, I would encourage you to subscribe. Yes, its 40 bucks ($10 per issue - 4 a year for now) and no, that's not cheap nowadays. However, I pay that for British bike magazines all the time. And this is a focused, quality, vintage bike magazine with beautiful photography and a good deal of depth. I say its well worth it.

Give it a try and let me know what you think ...

Would really love to know what mods have been done to this.

Looks like an FZ600 front end, FZR400 wheels, Ohlins rears, JMC or MotoCarrera swingarm, SpecII pipes and an unidentified
fibreglass seat.

The seat is not working for me .. perhaps when painted and upholstered .. other than that, lot of potential.

I read once from someone who worked with Kocinski in 1998 that he was always cleaning his motorhome, and everything else, but he never slept there!, he even dressed outside not to get it dirty. He used to go to a hotel, where he needed lots of towels. That's sad, he was/is a very talented rider.

Aldesiera, is someone making OSSAs again? I had a 1975 350MAR trialer, the engine was completely different than the one you show. Cases were the egg-shape, no radial cooling fins.

Also, I have ridden an original Yankee 500cc twin, again the engine was completely different (it was basically two 250cc OSSA singles siamesed together, and was air cooled).

Are these new production or concept bikes? I'd love to pick up a Yankee twin for the street, the originals were dual sports but were actually much better for road use.

I really loved OSSA motorcycles, having owned three of them through the 70s, and would love to be able to buy a new one.

Thanks, Paul

Paul C, I have found some information and OSSA is coming back with a new trial bike (the lightest trialer in the world, they say). The prototype will be presented in a few days at the Milan international bikeshow. It will be commercialized in 2010 in Europe and later (?) in USA. They have a website
http://www.ossafactory.es
I'm sure you'll like it

The yellow Ossa in the picture is a 1980 Tr80 350cc which has been rebuilt, but it keeps the original engine.
The yankee has a Rotax engine from a Snowmobile!! and some other components from different models.

You'll find it all (in Spanish) in the following site

If you need any translation I'll try to help

+1!
I think maybe I posted some other shots of this bike, but I think that view is new.

And awesome!

Man, I really hate to see this, been there too many times. And I have an eleven year old buddy, already dreading the possibility even though he is still healthy.

Please let me give my heartfelt condolances, I feel for your loss and wish you the best.

Paul

Wow! That really changes the look of it. Makes it look a lot more compact than the orange and silver ones I always see.

The facelift is a good start, but it also needs about 100lbs of liposuction. I can't get my head around how heavy that bike is. On the Shiver it's almost forgivable, but the Dorso is almost as heavy.
